The work of the Election Commission

The Election Commission is an independent constitutional body. The Election Commission is responsible for announcing election schedules, delimiting constituencies, compiling voter lists, supervising polling, announcing election results and setting up election tribunals to resolve election grievances. The seventh part of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh sets out the structure, powers and responsibilities of elections.


Article 118 of the Constitution of Bangladesh provides for the establishment of the Election Commission of Bangladesh and states that the Election Commission of Bangladesh shall consist of the Chief Election Commissioner and a number of other Election Commissioners as directed by the President from time to time and subject to the provisions of any law enacted. And appoint other election commissioners. If the Election Commission consists of more than one Election Commissioner, the Chief Election Commissioner will act as its Chairman. Subject to the provisions of the Constitution, the term of office of an Election Commissioner shall be five years from the date of his assumption of office and any person holding the office of Chief Election Commissioner shall not be eligible for the appointment of a Republican. Any other Election Commissioner shall be eligible to be appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner after termination of office in a similar capacity.

The powers and responsibilities of the Election Commission are described in Article 118, (4) Article 126 of the Constitution and Article 4 of the Representation of the People Order 1972. This article of the Constitution states that the Election Commission shall be independent in the discharge of its duties and shall be subject only to the Constitution and the law. The Chairman of the Commission or any of its members or any of its employees may, under the law, be allowed to exercise power on behalf of the Commission in carrying out the duties and responsibilities assigned to it by the Election Commissioner. It is the duty of all executive authorities to assist the Election Commission in discharging its responsibilities in accordance with Article 126 and Sections 4 and 5 of the Representation of the People Order 1972.
